Lady Cyclones finish third in District tournament

After a long weekend, the dust had finally settled Monday evening in the District 1-AAA girls basketball tournament with the David Crockett Lady Pioneers claiming the title. Your Elizabethton Lady Cyclones finished in third place, and this is a recap of exactly how they got there.

The Lady Cyclones entered the tournament as the two seed, with action kicking off for them against the Lady Vikings of Tennessee High Saturday evening. It was a hard fought contest but the Lady Cyclones would come up just short by a final of 56-47.

The Lady Cyclones fell into a scoring drought early in that one, but were able to draw things within 3 at the intermission, 22-19. The second half saw Tennessee High jump out to a large advantage early, but per usual, the Lady Cyclones would claw themselves back into it. However, the valiant comeback effort would not be enough, as the final score saw Tennessee High advance to the District Championship while Elizabethton would take part in the consolation contest to.

That brings things to last night, where the Lady Cyclones would square off against the Lady Blue Devils of Unicoi County.

Elizabethton got the shots falling early, with Rylee May knocking down two triples in the first to help the Lady Cyclones hold a 19-9 advantage through eight minutes of play.

The second period was no different, as Unicoi County had no answer for the offensive firepower of Elizabethton. At the break, the Lady Cyclones had jumped out to a comfortable 33-17 lead.

This trend continued throughout the second half, as the Lady Cyclones cruised to victory by a final of 53-35.

In the win, Elizabethton was led by Kayelyn Nave who put up 12 points, 6 of which coming from beyond the arc. Rylee May and Jamira Smalls each added 11 points to the total.

Furthermore, Jasy Shell and Rylee May were given District tournament honors as things wrapped up.

With the victory, the Lady Cyclones finished third in the district tournament and will now travel to Grainger County for a Regional quarterfinal contest on Friday. Game time will be provided when information is available.
