Cyclones cap off homecoming with thrilling victory over Patriots

After an exhilarating win from the Lady Cyclones in the previous contest, the Cyclone boys basketball team looked to keep things rolling in the final contest of the night amidst a homecoming celebration.

In what was a back and forth contest between Elizabethton and Sullivan East for the first half of action, the Cyclones were able to jump ahead in the later stages and come away with a thrilling victory, 73-68.

In the first quarter of play, the Patriots came out firing on all cylinders, knocking down three triples in the period and keeping Elizabethton in check. When the quarter came to a close, Sullivan East held a slim one point advantage, 18-17.

The second period saw a defensive battle, with each team struggling to make tough baskets. However, through the adversity the Cyclones were able to regain control of the lead, taking their own one point lead into the halftime break, up 31-30.

To open up the second half, the Cyclones provided an offensive explosion, while beginning to shut down the Patriots on the defensive end. Through the third period, Elizabethton had doubled the score of Sullivan East, 24-12, and took a 55-42 lead into the fourth.

However, the Patriots were not done yet, beginning to mount a comeback in the final quarter. A four point margin would be the closest that Sullivan East would get in the final eight minutes, as Elizabethton eventually closed things out with a 73-68 final.

For the Cyclones in the win, Hudson Pate led the team with 16 points, while Justin Whitehead followed closely with 14 of his own. Zack Wallin and Hudson Smith added 10 points each to the team total, while Andrew Barnett contributed 9 and Nathan Bailey scored 8.

The Cyclones return home on Friday for Senior night inside of John Treadway Gymnasium, taking on the Pioneers of David Crockett. JV begins at 5 PM, and Varsity action starts at 8 PM.
