Lady Cyclones throttle Tennessee High, while Cyclones drop close contest to Vikings

Friday marked the final conference game of the regular season for Elizabethton High School, welcoming the Vikings of Tennessee High to town in what was sure to be a set of thrilling matchups.

And that would be true, as the Lady Cyclones won big over the Lady Viking, while the Cyclones boys basketball team would fall in an exciting contest that included offensive firepower from both teams.

The first varsity matchup of the night featured the Lady Cyclones, and Elizabethton came out of the gate running. Shots were falling for the Lady Cyclones, but Tennessee High was not far behind, as Betsy held a 13-8 advantage after one.

The second period was more of the same, as a couple threes by Kayelyn Nave and Rylee May would widen the lead to that of 29-17 going into the break.

Although they had a comfortable lead at halftime, the Lady Cyclones were not content as they continued to push the tempo and not look back. Despite a Lady Viking comeback attempt, Elizabethton would roll to a 63-43 victory.

In the win, Reagan May led the Lady Cyclones with 15 points, while Jamira Smalls followed closely behind with 14. Rylee May and Kayelyn Nave finished the contest with 11 points a piece.

With the victory, the Lady Cyclones have clinched the two seed in the district tournament. They will be back in action on Tuesday at West Ridge.

The final contest of the evening featured the Cyclones boys basketball team taking on the first ranked team in the conference, the Tennessee High Vikings.

To get things going, Tennessee High couldn't miss, as the Vikings opened the game with 7 three point baskets in the first period. And while it took some warming up, the Cyclone offense came to life and attempted to keep pace, trailing 26-18 after one.

In the second quarter, Elizabethton was able to match the Vikings, not giving up any more of an advantage and matching Tennessee High's 15 points. At the half, the Cyclones trailed 41-33.

Throughout most of the second half, the Cyclones seemed to be mounting a comeback, but were unable to get over the hump and bring things within 8. In the end, Elizabethton fell by a final 75-53.

In the effort, Hudson Pate led the Cyclones in the scoring department with 18 points. Justin Whitehead knocked down three triples to push his total to 9, while Nathan Bailey and Hudson Smith both put up 8.

With the loss, Elizabethton will need some help from Sullivan East to avoid the play-in game for the district tournament. If that is not the case, the Cyclones will have to square off against the Patriots for a spot in the tournament.

The Cyclones are on the road to close out the regular season, with their next contest taking place at West Ridge on Tuesday.
