After spending their first couple weeks of the season on the road, the Elizabethton Cyclones Men's and Women's basketball teams were finally inside John Treadway Gymnasium on Tuesday for their home debut against the Johnson County Longhorns.
And it was an exciting night for the home team, as all four teams, (Men's and Women's JV & Varsity) swept the Longhorns in remarkable fashion.
Starting with Women's Varsity, the action began before the ball was even tipped, with Senior
Jamira Smalls being honored for her 500th career rebound, a remarkable feat that she accomplished one week ago.
The Lady Cyclones got off to a hot start, with Smalls opening up the scoring down low. The buckets kept coming as the home squad jumped out to a 21-11 advantage after one. By halftime Betsy grew their lead, adding on 16 more, including 7 from Junior guard
Adrian Heading, taking a 37-20 advantage into the break.Â
Coming into the second half, The Lady Cyclones kept pressing on, scoring 15 in the third and 28 in the final period, ending things off by doubling the Longhorns score, 80-40. Sophomore
Addison Bunn led Elizabethton with 29 points in the contest, while
Reagan May finished with 13, and Smalls, Heading,
Rylee May, and
Sydney Minton added 9 a piece.Â
After a short break in the action, it was time for the Men's team to tip off in the final game of the evening. This contest was much closer in the opening minutes, as the lead changed hands multiple times before the frame ended with Betsy taking the lead 20-14.
Nathan Bailey got hot in the second, knocking down 2 three's en route to 10 points in the period, helping the Cyclones take a large 50-30 advantage into the halftime break.
Elizabethton would continue to apply pressure in the third quarter, growing their advantage to 73-50. The fourth period saw the Longhorns attempt to mount a comeback, but Betsy slammed the door on their way to an 82-70 victory.
The Cyclones were led by Sophomore
Evan Chambers, who put up 24 points in the win. He was followed closely by Bailey with 21, while
Hudson Pate contributed 15.
Both teams are back in action later this week, with Women's Basketball traveling to Johnson City on Friday and Saturday for the DoubleTree Roundball Classic at Science Hill. The Men's team takes on Happy Valley Saturday night.
