The District 1-AAA basketball tournament has officially wrapped up, with the David Crockett Pioneers claiming the title Tuesday evening. The Cyclones also took part in the events of the final night, falling to Unicoi County in the district consolation game, which determines seeding in the regional quarterfinals.
To get to this point, the Cyclones began tournament play on night one, needing to defeat Sullivan East in order to advance to the district semifinals and clinch a regional contest.
That matchup showcased the offensive firepower of Elizabethton, as the Cyclones got the long ball working on the way to a 63-46 victory.
In that contest,
Andrew Barnett led the team in points with 16, 12 of which came from behind the arc.
Hudson Pate finished the contest with 14, while both big men
Nathan Bailey and
Hudson Smith contributed 8.
That following day, on Saturday, Elizabethton faced a touch challenge in the form of the top seeded Tennessee High Vikings. In that contest, the Cyclones fought hard, but in the end were unable to keep up with the Vikings, falling by a final of 71-48.
Zack Wallin led the team in that matchup with 13 points, while
Justin Whitehead and Barnett finished with 11 and 9, respectively.
That brings us to last night, Tuesday, where the Cyclones squared off against the Blue Devils of Unicoi County in order to determine who would be the three seed and who would be the four seed going into regional play.
At the half, Elizabethton had been performing well, hitting their shots and keeping the Blue Devils at bay on the way to a 25-22 advantage. However, Unicoi County came out in the second half on fire, eventually stealing the lead and holding on to it, defeating the Cyclones by a score of 67-58.
In the effort, the Cyclones were led by Bailey who scored 22. Pate put up 12 points of his own, while
Zack Wallin contributed 9.
Additionally, Bailey's performance over the weekend earned him a spot on the District's all-tournament team.
With the loss, Elizabethton claims the fourth spot in regional play, and will travel to Greeneville High School on Saturday to take on the Greene Devils.
More information will be announced as it is provided.
