In an action packed night inside of John Treadway Gymnasium Thursday, the Cyclones boys basketball team capped things off with an exciting comeback victory over the Unicoi County Blue Devils.
After trailing big throughout the first quarter, Elizabethton battled back until they were neck and neck with the Blue Devils, eventually emerging victorious by a final of 59-54.
The Blue Devils were on fire in the early stages, scoring the first 12 points of the ball game before the Cyclones would get on the board midway through the quarter. By the time the period had concluded, Unicoi County jumped to a 16-5 advantage,
The second quarter saw the Cyclones begin to storm back, beginning to hit their shots and somewhat close the gap. At the break, Unicoi County's lead had been diminished to that of 6 points, 26-20.
In the third, the Cyclone offense began to excel at one of their greatest strengths, draining four triples in the period, three of which coming from the hot hand of
Justin Whitehead. When the dust had settled in quarter number three, Elizabethton had drawn within one possession, 40-38.
With momentum and the home crowd on their side, the Cyclones continued the tough play that had gotten them to that point, eventually taking the lead and never looking back, winning 59-54.
Hudson Pate led the Cyclones in scoring with 16 points in the win, while Whitehead contributed with 15, all coming from beyond the arc.
Andrew Barnett and
Hudson Smith added 12 and 8 to the total, respectively.
The Cyclones will be on the road Saturday in Johnson City taking on Science Hill. JV starts at 3:30 PM and Varsity begins at 6:30 PM.
The next home contest will be Tuesday for homecoming against the Sullivan East Patriots. JV action begins at 5 PM and the Varsity contest will tip off at 8 PM.
