Cyclones drop heartbreaker in overtime

On a rainy Tuesday night inside of John Treadway Gymnasium, the Elizabethton Cyclones fell in heartbreaking fashion against the Hurricanes of Morristown East.

It was a fast-paced start for both teams in the first period, with each squad displaying offensive firepower as the Cyclones would take the lead into the quarter break.

The second quarter saw Morristown East take their first lead of the ball game, but the Cyclones were not phased, regaining control going into halftime, 35-33.

However, the Hurricanes would come out firing in the third, taking the lead once again midway through the period, closing out the action up 48-46.

As expected, the late stages were back and forth, with each team keeping a close pace with the other. But four quarters would not be enough to decide a winner, as things were knotted up at 60 a piece heading into overtime.

The final four minutes were much like the previous eight, as neither team seemed to be able to pull away. With just seconds left, the Cyclones had a chance to send the game into another extra frame, but a layup attempt rattled out, allowing Morristown East to escape with a 71-69 victory.

Hudson Pate led the Cyclones in the effort with 28 points, followed by Andrew Barnett who scored 15. Evan Chambers and Jackson Buckles also made their mark, contributing 8 points a piece in the contest.

The Cyclones next contest takes place at the West Ridge FCA Tournament, where they take on KACHEA at 6 PM Thursday, and Chilhowee, VA on Saturday at 4 PM

Elizabethton returns home on January 3, where they host the Happy Valley Warriors. JV tips off at 6 PM, with varsity starting at 7:30 PM.
