It was a thrilling night for Betsy Baseball on Tuesday, as the Elizabethton Cyclones took down conference foe Tennessee High to claim the regular season district title heading into the final week before tournament play begins. Thanks to an impressive performance on the mound and timely hitting at the plate, Elizabethton was able to handle the Vikings by a score of 4-1.
The Cyclones found themselves in a 1-0 hole early thanks to a Viking single in the top of the second, but in the bottom of the frame Elizabethton was able to get the bats going and strike back.
JD Hooks would lead things off in the home half of the inning with a triple into center field. While he was tagged out going for home one batter later, his hit set the stage for a
Jack Blevins RBI single that knotted things up at one a piece. The fun didn't stop there, as Blevins would come around to score soon after on an
Evan Chambers single.
Bryson Rowland would round things off in the frame, bringing home a run on a fielder's choice to give the Cyclones a 3-1 advantage through two.
In the bottom of the fourth, Elizabethton would tack on one more thanks to a
Rhett Slagle sac fly that would bring home
Marshall Holtsclaw. That would be the final run scored for either team for the remainder of the contest.
On the mound, Slagle dominated the Viking lineup, allowing only one earned run on five hits through six full innings. The junior also sat down ten opposing batters by way of the strikeout before he was relieved in the seventh inning.Â
Justin Whitehead was credited with the Save, coming in for the final inning and striking out three en route to the victory.
With the win, the Cyclones move to 18-10 on the season with a mark of 10-1 in conference play. Elizabethton is now locked into the number one seed for the District 1-3A tournament next week.Â
To wrap up the regular season, Betsy Baseball hosts West Greene on Friday for senior night, and will welcome Unicoi County on Monday for the regular season finale.
