The Elizabethton Cyclone Football team kept their undefeated conference record intact Friday night, traveling to Rutledge to take down the Grainger Grizzlies, spoiling Senior Night in the process. Betsy was able to strike early and often, walking away with a convincing 49-6 victory.
With Senior quarterback
Rhett Slagle out due to injury, Freshman
Brycen Blevins was called upon to lead the Cyclone Offense. And he looked like a natural from the jump, as after a 7 yard rushing score from William McDuffie to open things up, Blevins found
Justius Wallin from 23 yards out to increase the advantage.
Jumping ahead to the second quarter, the Blevins to Wallin connection would happen again. this time from 26 yards out to make it a 21-0 ball game. Not long after, McDuffie would find the goal line once again, making Grizzly defenders miss on his way to a 30 yard rushing score.
Grainger would get on the board late in the half when quarterback Colton Parrot tossed one into the end zone to Gage Wyatt, making it a 28-6 contest.
With less than 30 seconds to go in the first half, Betsy would pull out a bit of trickeration as Blevins found
C.J. Mathes who took the pass 39 yards to the house. Heading into the break, Elizabethton found themselves with a comfortable 35-6 lead.
The Cyclones wouldn't even need to run an offensive play in the third period, as the lone score in the quarter came from the special teams unit when
Zack Wallin took the Gringer Punt to the house from 62 yards out.
Legend Pate would cap things off with a 10 yard rushing score, increasing the advantage to that of 49-6 before the clock hit zero.
In the win, Blevins threw for 200 yards and three scores. McDuffie had three carries for 61 yards and two touchdowns, while Pate had 13 yards and a score.Â
Justius Wallin hauled in three passes for 66 yards and two scores, while Mathes had the lone reception for 39 yards and a touchdown.
Most impressively, the Cyclones amassed 289 total yards of offense on 25 total plays.
Elizabethton improves to 6-1 on the season, and remain a perfect 4-0 in region play. The Cyclones are off this week, but return home to play Sullivan East on October 17th.
